Benefits of Public Power
South Central is a non-profit political subdivision of the State of Nebraska. Because Nebraska is the only state in the nation that is 100 percent public power, electric rates are lower than the national average.
Local Ownership
A board of seven directors is elected from citizens taking residential service from the district during general elections. These directors live in the district and protect the interests of the customers they represent. Because there are no stockholders, margins earned by South Central are reinvested in the systems necessary to make electric service available and reliable.
Community Involvement
South Central is dedicated to the safe and efficient use of electricity. Safety programs for schools are an important outreach program.
Low Rates
South Central’s average residential rates in 2018 was: 9.28¢ per kWh
(As opposed to the national average of the approximate 12.5¢ per kWh as depicted by the brown line in the chart below.)

This amounted to approximately $547,000 in savings to South Central PPD’s residential customers. Compared to the national average, South Central Public Power District residential customers saved approximately $1,630,000.
